Dubuque Girl Scout creates outdoor learning lab

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

A Dubuque high school student is helping her school go green. Alyssa Mendenhall, a Hempstead High School senior, created an outdoor learning lab for Hempstead High School students.

The lab features planters, compost bins, benches, and a green house. Mendenhall said she hopes the outdoor learning lab inspires others to become more sustainable.

"I know classroom learning can sometimes be boring. So having a hands on way for (the students) to experience what they learned in the classroom will be a great addition to the school," said Mendenhall.

The outdoor learning lab was created by Mendenhall for her Girl Scout Gold Award project. The Girl Scout Gold Award compares to the Boy Scout Eagle Award and is the highest award a Girl Scout can receive.
