Memorial Day season prompting stricter DUI enforcement

Posted: Updated:

Law enforcement agencies nationwide will be cracking down on drunk drivers as Memorial Day weekend approaches.

The Prairie du Chien, Wis., police department, just across the Mississippi River from Marquette and McGregor, announced Thursday it will be stepping up enforcement. Using grant money from the Department of Transportation's Highway Safety Project, the police department will participate in Wisconsin's "Booze and Belts" and "Click it or Ticket" safety campaigns from May 20 through June 2.

The grant will allow the police department to put additional officers on the streets to focus on alcohol-impaired driving.

"During the Booze and Belts mobilization," Prairie du Chien police chief Chad Abram said, "additional officers will be added at strategic times to prevent needless traffic deaths and injuries by arresting drunken drivers and enforcing the mandatory safety belt law."
