Cedar Rapids dedicates Sunner Park in fallen officer's honor

Posted: Updated:
CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - There's a new Sunner Memorial Park in Cedar Rapids to honor a fallen officer.

The city dedicated the park in honor of Bret Sunner, a police office killed in the line of duty in 1984.

Officials dedicated a park in Sunner's honor in 2000, but it was damaged in the 2008 flood.

On Thursday, city leaders honored all the Cedar Rapids police officers and firefighters who've died while serving -- including Sunner.

"He was quite an outdoorsman, so it seems appropriate that there's green space to honor him," said Gail Hansen, Sunner's sister. "It's very appropriate."

The park and the Police Officers and Firefighters Memorial Monument are located off 8th Ave SW, between the police station and the Cedar River.
