CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

A panel to discuss and raise awareness about elder abuse is set for Thursday afternoon from 3-5 p.m. on the first floor of Mercy Hallagan Education Center in Cedar Rapids.

The free "Violence Prevention through the Lifespan: Elder Abuse" aims to address the problem of, what the event press release calls, one of the most under-recognized and under-reported social problems in the United States.

The goal of the discussion is to shed light on the prevalence and impact of elder abuse in Iowa and why there are "cracks in the current system" and how to work within that system. The discussion will also cover how the Johnson County Older Adult Death Review Team reviews reported cases of elder abuse and makes recommendations to community providers.

"It's estimated that one in 23 elder abuse cases are never reported," said Tracy Robertson, Regional Protective Services Coordinator for the Heritage Area Agency on Aging.

The panel is made up of Dr. Sara Sanders, Associate Professor in the School of Social Work at the University of Iowa, Mark Hensch, Johnson County Medical Examiner Department Administrator, Kimberly Murphy, Iowa Department on Aging Policy Director, and Tracy Robertson.

Attendees needed to pre-register for the panel on Monday.
