With winter fading, construction projects begin in eastern Iowa

Posted: Updated:
WATERLOO (KWWL) - Summertime construction projects are already underway, as more road work can be done in warmer weather.

Construction continues along Hwy. 218 in Waterloo near the San Marnan Dr. exit, and multiple spots along I-380 between Cedar Rapids and Waterloo undergo work.

According to the Iowa Dept. of Transportation, eastern Iowa drivers can expect to see the following projects the next few months:
  • Johnson Co. -- I-80 to be repaved between I-380 and Iowa 965; June through August
  • Linn Co. -- U.S. 30 to be repaved from Stoney Point Rd. East to Edgewood, near Cedar Rapids; June through November
  • Dubuque Co. -- Julien Dubuque Bridge to be repaired over the Mississippi River; closed to all traffic for 10 days in July

The Iowa DOT reports Dubuque drivers will be detoured via U.S. 61 to cross the Mississippi River during the closure.

The department has outlined a five-year plan to repair/rebuild Iowa's highways and improve driver safety. The FY 2014-2018 schedule was approved in June of last year.

Pending additional federal funding, the plan calls for roughly $2.6 billion in spending.
