Klunder no longer 'person of interest' in Lyric, Elizabeth case

EVANSDALE (KWWL) -

The two year anniversary of the day 10-year-old Lyric Cook and 8-year-old Elizabeth Collins were abducted is fast approaching.

The girls were last seen near Meyers Lake in Evansdale on July 13, 2012. The girls' bodies were found in Bremer County several months later.

To this day, no arrests have been made in the girls' murders. Although there hasn't been a lot of publicity regarding the investigation, authorities say it's far from a cold case.

DCI Special Agent Mike Roehrkasse with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation says the one thing they seem pretty confident of is that Michael Klunder is no longer a person of interest in this case.

Klunder abducted two girls near Dayton about a year ago. One of the girls escaped, but Kathlynn Shephard's body was later found in the Des Moines River.

Klunder was found dead near Dayton from an apparent suicide.

Investigators spent time looking into any connection between the Dayton case and the Evansdale case because of the similarities with both.

Based on the information collected from forensic testing, they were comfortable Wednesday saying Klunder is no longer a person of interest.

"But again, with cases this big and information this voluminous, you always keep that door open that something else could come," said Roehrkasse. "But based on the information we have right now, it's a strong feeling that he is not a person of interest or suspect."

Investigators say, based on information they have, they know where Michael Klunder was the day Lyric and Elizabeth went missing.
