Family displaced, 4 pets dead after Cedar Rapids fire

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - A home fire Wednesday afternoon killed four pets and displaced a Cedar Rapids family.

A neighbor noticed smoke coming from the rear of a mobile home at about 2 p.m. in the 2900 block of Johnson Ave. NW and called 911, according to the Cedar Rapids Fire Department.

The neighbor attempted to rescue pets trapped inside but was driven back by smoke and fire, according to the report.

When crews arrived, the found the rear third of the home engulfed in flame with heavy smoke throughout.

No one was home at the time. One dog and three cats died in the fire.

The home was owned by Toni Hunt, according to officials. The family is being helped by the American Red Cross and Alliant Energy.

It was unknown how the fire started or if smoke alarms were working, according to officials.
