The Eastern Iowa Airport says they had the largest drop in air fares among the top 100 airports in 2013.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Research and Innovative Technology Administration says fares dropped at the Eastern Iowa Airport from an average of $443.25 in fourth quarter 2012 to an average of $370.29 in fourth quarter 2013, a 16.5 percent decrease.
The organization also says fares at the Eastern Iowa Airport have dropped 35 percent since 2000, placing them sixth among the top 100 airports in the country.
RITA says nationally, the average fare for 2013 adjusted for inflation was $381, up 0.1 percent from the 2012 average of $380. It was down 17 percent from the inflation-adjusted annual high of $459 in 2000.
"When I started in 2010, the most common complaint I heard was that we had high fares," Airport Director Tim Bradshaw said in a written statement. "We have worked closely with our airline partners to try to convince them to make our market competitive and they have listened. There is a delicate balance with the airlines to keep a market both competitive and profitable. We seem to be closer to that balance."
While fares are down, passenger traffic is up at the Eastern Iowa Airport. Passenger numbers were up 12.8 percent from 2011-2012 and 6.2 percent from 2012 to 2013.
