Marion Tree Board to discuss Emerald Ash Borer

Posted: Updated:
MARION (KWWL) - The Marion Tree Board will host an informational meeting for Marion residents on Tuesday, May 13 at 6:00 p.m. at the Marion Public Library.

Dustin Hinrichs, Marion Tree Board member; Mike Carolan, Parks and Recreation Director; and Mark Vitosh, Iowa Department of Natural Resources District Forester will be presenting information about the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB).

The EAB is a destructive and highly invasive insect that has the potential to affect the City's urban forest for years to come. To date, there has not been a positive identification of the EAB in Marion; however the Marion City Council has adopted a readiness plan to address trees planted in parks, right-of-way, common areas and privately owned areas.

The City of Marion is responsible only for trees located in the right-of-ways, parks, city owned properties and green spaces.  All trees located on private property are the responsibility of the property owner.

Marion has 3,055 deciduous trees located on its city right-of-way, with 764 being ash trees. It is estimated that 700 ash trees exist on other city property including parks and green space. An official inventory of privately-owned ash trees does not exist, but it is estimated the number equals the right-of-way ash tree estimate.

The program will include an overview the City of Marion's EAB Readiness Plan and how Marion's public ash tree population will be cared for. Treatment options for ash trees planted on private property will also be discussed. A question and answer period will follow.
