As spring storms rip through, insurance agents say to know your coverage

WATERLOO (KWWL) - Many people waking up across the Midwest Tuesday morning are forced to deal with storm damage, after recent weather ripped through the region.

More spring weather likely lags close behind, so insurance agents say there are ways to stay ahead of the storm.

Steve Hubbard with State Farm Insurance in Waterloo said the first step is preparation:
  • Trim any overhanging limbs above the home or property
  • Clean gutters
  • Extend downspouts
  • Secure outside objects
  • Tie down outdoor furniture
Hubbard said in April and May of last year, Iowa's springtime tipped many lives upside down.

"We had a significant number of losses both with our homeowner policies and our auto policies, and it was in the thousands of homes and automobiles that were affected by that storm."

For those who are faced with storm damage, Hubbard advises taking the appropriate action:
  • Contact your insurance agent
  • Agents will assess the physical safety of storm damage victims
  • If home is a total loss, agents will assist in relocation
  • Claim process begins
  • Repairing/rebuilding phases
Agents said even the most common problem can turn extreme.

"Water damage is really something that can disrupt somebody's life and it's very challenging for people to deal with, and that's why we want to be in a position to help as much as we can," Hubbard said.

And, the biggest piece of advice? Know what you have. Insurance agents recommend all clients be aware of exactly what coverage plan they have, including any deductibles and/or endorsements.

Agents also advise taking an inventory of the home; almost all policies cover both the structure of the home and also personal belongings.
