Waterloo School Board mulls athletics changes

Posted: Updated:

The Waterloo Community School District wants to make its varsity sports teams more competitive and grow participation.

A committee of administrators, coaches, parent volunteers, and youth sports leaders met over the last 10 months to develop a plan.

Monday night, the school board heard that plan.

It includes 18 recommendations, including ones as simple as better communication between coaches and youth programs to ones as expensive as building a new gym at each middle and high school.

Committee members say the East and West High teams are sometimes at a competitive disadvantage to the districts they compete against.

They say while some ideas will mean long-term success, other proposals could yield results quickly.

"When people think of results, they think of winning and losing percentages but those aren't the only results. If we added coaches at the middle school level, we would see a better experience for those middle school students within a year. There's going to be more instruction time and if you have more instruction, you'll want to improve and if you want to improve, you'll continue to participate," said committee member Marvin Spencer.

The proposal also suggests possibly moving to one high school system, with one high school sports program.

No decisions were made at Monday's school board meeting.
