DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Hempstead High School's assistant principal and athletic/activities director Tom Meissner announced Monday he will retire at the end of the current school year.

Meissner has worked for the Dubuque Community School District since 2004.

While working at Hempstead, Meissner was involved in facility enhancement projects ranging from the renovation of the softball field and addition of a turf field and new track at Hempstead to the reconstruction of Dalzell Field, which Hempstead and Dubuque Senior High School share.

He was also involved in the planning of the ongoing $33 million Hempstead renovation, which will include new gymnasium space and an auditorium.

"There is such a family atmosphere at Hempstead and I have loved my time here," Meissner said in a press release from the district. "I'm excited about the great things happening at the school and how they will benefit our students."

According to the press release, Meissner has been an educator for 35 years. He taught physical education and health in Earling, Council Bluffs and Omaha. He then moved into administration, serving for six years as assistant principal and athletic director at Ralston Middle School in Omaha and seven years as principal of Lewis Central Middle School in Council Bluffs, before joining the Hempstead staff.

"Tom has played an important role in the Hempstead High School activities and athletics programs over the past 10 years," Hempstead principal Lee Kolker said in the release. "We wish him all the best as he moves into retirement and know that he will always be a Mustang."

In his retirement, Meissner said he will be spending time with his wife in the Punta Gorda, Fla., home they recently bought.
