International Migratory Bird Day celebrates and raises awareness of bird migration, a widespread and annual occurrence taking place all throughout North and South America.

"Public awareness and concern are crucial components of migratory bird conservation," a Mines of Spain press release stated. "The more you learn about birds, the more enthusiastic about birds you will become."

Those attending the event will learn about the threats facing birds and how people can help mitigate those problems.

Dan Wenny of Loras College will be at the event to provide information on migratory birds that come to the Dubuque area for the summer to nest or make a stop on their trip farther north.

Wenny plans on capturing migratory birds at Mines of Spain in order to weigh them, take other measurements, band them and then release the birds. Those data will go to research labs.

Birds captured last year in the Mines of Spain include orioles, warblers, redstarts and grosbeaks.

Those attending the event are encouraged to bring binoculars.

For more information, call the Mines of Spain's E. B. Lyons Interpretive Center at 563.556.0620 or visit www.minesofspain.org. Wayne Buchholtz is park ranger.
