Eastern Iowa communities celebrate Bike to Work Week

Posted: Updated:
WATERLOO (KWWL) - Expect to see more bicyclists out and about this week once the weather clears up -- Bike to Work Week is underway.

The month of May is National Bike Month, sponsored by the League of American Bicyclists. The goal is to showcase the benefits of bicycling and encourage more people to give it a try.

According to the League of American Bicyclists, more than half of the U.S. population lives within five miles of their workplace. From 2000 to 2011, the number of bicycle commuters in the U.S. grew by more than 47 percent.

National Bike to Work Day will be Friday. Several communities have special events planned for people who commute to work on their bicycle.
