CLAYTON COUNTY (KWWL) -

It's the time of year many eastern Iowans anticipate, morel mushroom picking season. Morels are edible mushrooms which can be found in wooded areas near a tree's roots. Morels are commonly found in wooded areas along the Mississippi River.

Iowa Morel Fest helped kick off this year's morel hunting season in McGregor. The festival featured guided hunting tours through wooded areas around McGregor.

"Everybody found mushrooms, we had about 20 people," said morel hunter, Brian Klein.

Klein said it looks like it will be a good morel season. He said the next 10 days will be the ideal time to go hunting.
