Waverly-Shell Rock teachers to retire, end annual camping trips

For the last 22 years, fourth-grade teachers Jo Young and Pam Egli have taken their students to Backbone State Park on a camping trip.

The pair have been teaching at Carey Elementary of Waverly-Shell Rock Community Schools for 33 years, and will be retiring at the end of the 2013-14 school year.

The annual camping trip typically involve hikes, storytelling, campfires and a night hike with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

About 50 students and more than 24 parents attend each trip.
