DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

The Dubuque Community School District named a Hempstead High School English teacher as its Teacher of the Year.

The distinction went to Kate Riepe, who also serves as a theater director and speech coach for Hempstead.

The district announced the news Thursday at its annual Educators' Recognition Dinner.

Other finalists for the Teacher of the Year Award were:
- Doug Bausch, a social studies and language arts teacher at Jefferson Middle School
- Tim Ebeling, a language arts teacher at Washington Middle School
- Brad Fautsch, an art teacher at Senior High School
- Michelle Hunt, an English teacher at Hempstead High School
- Erin Kennedy, an early childhood/special education teacher at Prescott Elementary School
- Lisa Lueken, a graduation coach at the Alternative Learning Center
- Amy Mozena, a media/technology coach at Washington Middle School
- Sara Runde, a first-grade teacher at Marshall Elementary School
- Angie Wessels, a social studies teacher at Senior High School

The district named winners of two other awards at Thursday's dinner.

Dubuque Senior High School assistant principal Dan Merritt received the TEAM (Together Educators and Administrators Make-it-happen) Award, which goes every year to an administrator for his or her exemplary support of teacher success. Merritt served as Senior's interim principal after the former principal moved into a position at the district office.

Joann Lueken received the Friend of Education Award. Lueken retired this year as the district's manager of payroll and benefits. She served in the Dubuque Community School District for more than 46 years, making her one of the longest-tenured employees in the district's history.
