UPDATE: Independence man killed by CN train

Posted: Updated:
INDEPENDENCE (KWWL) - An Independence man is dead after being run over by a Canadian National Railway train Thursday night.

The Buchanan County Sheriff's Office says they received a report of the incident at approximately 9:15 p.m. on Thursday near the Wapsipinicon River just outside of Independence.

Thomas Lee Davis, 40, of Independence, was pronounced dead at the scene. No foul play is suspected, according to the sheriff's office.

Officials say Davis was observed by CN train operators lying on the railroad tracks. Operators then applied the emergency brakes, but could not stop the 76-car train and struck Davis.

Officials transferred Davis' body to the State Medical Examiner's Office in Ankeny for an autopsy and toxicology report.

The Area Ambulance Service, Independence Police, Independence Fire, Iowa State Patrol and CN Railroad Police.

Amie Steffeneicher contributed to this report.
