MT. VERNON (KWWL) -

Students from Mount Vernon Middle School will be the only middle school students in the state participating in the Science Olympiad, a national science competition.

Mount Vernon Middle School is the only middle school in Iowa registered to participate in the event. Ames High School is the only other school in Iowa registered for the Olympiad.

In order to qualify for the national tournament, students must compete in a regional qualifying tournament and a state finals tournament. From there, the top 120 teams in the nation are invited to the national competition.

Each team is made up of 15 students and is lead by one teacher. Mount Vernon Middle School's team is headed by middle school science teacher Rob Hanson.

At the event, teams compete in events ranging from lab-based, pre-built and research-based events.

The 30th anniversary of the Science Olympiad National Tournament will be held at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida, on May 16 and 17.
