College moving day: Unwanted furniture at UNI gets second life

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

Unwanted futons, clothes and dishes in Cedar Falls are getting a second life thanks to a university project.

Students at the University of Northern Iowa are packing up their dorm rooms this week, and Panther Pick Up gives students an alternative to the dumpster behind the dorm.

Instead of throwing useable items away, students can drop those items off at trucks parked outside student residence halls. Those items are then donated to local charities like the Salvation Army and Saint Vincent de Paul.

Organizers say the effort started six years ago to keep items from going into a landfill.

“The program has grown as students become more aware of Panther Pick Up and become more aware of issues around sustainability, and trying to be more Earth-friendly," director of University Health Services Kathy Green said.

The times for donation are 1 to 4 p.m. May 7 and 8, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 9.

Locations for the pick-up are the east side of Redeker Center, 23rd Street near Commons Circle, East Towers, and northwest corner of Campbell Hall.

Students living off campus may also donate items by calling St. Vincent de Paul at 319-232-3366 to schedule pick up of usable furniture, computers, keyboards, printers, computer accessories and other large items.
