WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Gov. Branstad and a representative from Canadian National Railroad announced a two-year, $150,000 donation to the Northeast Iowa Food Bank on Thursday from CN.

That's in addition to $150,000 appropriated by the Iowa legislature for the fiscal year to the Northeast Iowa Food Bank in 2014.

"We appreciate what CN has done to assist the Food Bank in providing more nutritious food to people in need in northeast Iowa," said Barbara Prather, executive director of the food bank, in a written statement Thursday. "The money provided by the state legislature has heightened the awareness to the issue of hunger and brought companies such as CN forward to provide resources to help alleviate hunger in our community."

The food bank said it will use the money to provide food such as cheese, fresh fruits and vegetables, canned meat, peanut butter and canned fruit, to the 47,620 northeast Iowa families it serves.
