KEOKUK COUNTY (KWWL) -

What started as an ordinary Sunday evening for Paul Duello and his son Ben, turned out to be anything but.

“It was a typical day,” said Duello. It went from rain, to 4:30 her lying dead in my arms. I just froze.”

Emotions are still raw for the Duellos as they recall the minutes just before the EF-1 tornado spawned winds of more than 100 mph across Keokuk County, taking the life of Duello’s fiancé, 50-year-old Angie Hanchett.

“For the most part it’s been pretty good, but it’s day to day,” said Duello. “Livestock survived, obviously she didn’t.”

The deadly storms left a path of destruction. A path the Duellos family say robbed the life of their loved on.

“She meant a lot to me,” said Duello’s son, Ben. “She was like a second mom to me and helped me out with whatever I needed and she was always there for me if I needed anything.”

They were out on the family farm, near Kinross doing chores trying to get things in place before the storm hit.

“I came out to do chores to get things done before it got here, obviously not knowing what was going to be,” said Duello.

Duello and Hanchett were planning to tie the knot in the fall and build a new home in the spring, but it was all cut short, as a result of those deadly storms.

The family says friends and neighbors have been very supportive of them during this hard time.

“Just weird getting up in the morning and not having her sitting around,” said Ben.

A family friend set up a scholarship fund in Hanchett’s honor for Ben who plans to attend Kirkwood College after graduation.
