High river levels delay start of Cassville Car Ferry service

CASSVILLE, Wis. (KWWL) -

The Mississippi River's high river levels have left the Cassville Car Ferry docked in Cassville, Wisconsin for the time being. The car ferry was supposed to begin running for the season on May 2nd.

"We are hoping (it will open) in the next three weeks, but that is going to be Mother Natures call. The river has to be below the 13-foot mark for the road to be accessible on the Iowa side," Keevin Williams, Cassville village president said.

City officials said the high river levels will also create a late start for the tourism season for Cassville. They estimate some 10,000 people use the ferry every year.

"There are a number of patrons that come throughout the year and one of the reasons they come is to ride the ferry. So I think you see a drop in numbers because of it not being operated." Williams said Wednesday.

Last year, the Cassville Car Ferry also had a late start to its season due to high river levels. City officials said the ferry did not start running full weeks last summer until July. Bob Vogt owns Vogt's Town Pump in Cassville. He said if the ferry starts as late as last year, it could effect his bottom line.

"When it's June and July and it's not running, boy do we know it." Vogt said.

Cassville city officials expect the Cassville Car Ferry will be open in the coming weeks.
