CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

The former city clerk of Masonville pleaded guilty to taking more than $30,000 from the city in federal court in Cedar Rapids on Monday.

Strawberry Point native, Christine King was convicted of one count of mail fraud.

In her plea agreement, King admitted that from July 2002 until October 2011 she routinely issued fake paychecks and expense reimbursement checks to herself; she also admitted to falsely inflating the city's bank account balances in the reports that she provided to the city council and to the Auditor for the State of Iowa to keep people from discovering the fraud.

King will be sentenced at a later date. She could be sentenced to a maximum of 20 years in prison and could be fined $250,000.

King remains free -- based on previously set conditions -- until her sentencing.
