Black Hawks storm past Sioux City to advance to Clark Cup final

Posted: Updated:
SIOUX CITY (KWWL) - The second time was the charm for the Waterloo Black Hawks. Two days after dropping an overtime heartbreaker at Sioux City, Waterloo rolled past the Musketeers 5-1 to close down the series and advance to their second Clark Cup final in the past 3 seasons. The Black Hawks won the series 3 games to 1.

The two goalkeepers ruled the first 35 minutes before the Black Hawks busted up the scoring drought. Drew Melanson tipped in a hard wrist shot by Brandon Montour with 5 minutes remaining in the second period. Peter Krieger picked up the second goal, scoring on a rush attack just 44 seconds later as Waterloo took a 2-0 lead in to the 3rd period.

That lead was cut in half early in the 3rd when Brandon Hawkins scored on a rebound to pull the Musketeers within 1, but that's when Waterloo took over. Blake Winiecki snapped home a cross-ice pass from Liam Pecararo for a 2 goal advantage midway through the period. Winiecki then fed Tyler Sheehy for a dagger goal with 3:29 left, while Zach Sanford added an empty netter 19 seconds later.

The Black Hawks advance to face Indiana in the Clark Cup finals. Waterloo will host games 1 and 2 at Young Arena on Friday and Saturday. The two teams met just twice during the regular season with each team picking up a victory.
