Luther college student defying odds after serious football injury

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) - A Luther College student is defying the odds after doctors told him he only had a 3% chance of ever gaining any movement or feeling below his neck.

Chris Norton became paralyzed from the neck down after he was seriously injured during a Luther College football game.

"Now I've been able to walk with a walker, working with crutches. It's just a slow progression towards independent walking," said Norton.

Norton is getting closer to independently walking, but he wants to independently drive a vehicle. He says he's even passed the driving evaluation.

He says since the accident he has had to rely on his friends to drive him around and says if he gets a vehicle he can drive, he'll be able to continue to serve his community. Since the accident, Norton has become a motivational speaker, telling his story and inspiring others.

"Let other people know that no matter what situation you're going through in life, there always going to face challenges and it's how you respond to those challenges," said Norton.

That community involvement motivated Norton's girlfriend to enter him in a contest to win a car accessible to his needs.

"Chris has done so much for other people and he continues to do so. And I think the coolest thing is he doesn't expect anything in return but I think it's time that something really amazing happens for him. He's had a lot of challenges over the last three and a half years that he's dealt with," said Emily Summers.

"I would continue to try to make my community, my state of Iowa and just everyone, especially with a disability a better place," said Norton.
