MT. VERNON (KWWL) -

Hundreds of artists used streets and sidewalks as their canvas this weekend in Mount Vernon.

The annual Chalk the Walk, 2-day festival features work of more than 300 artists.

The artists used more than a half ton of chalk.

Children created their own masterpieces, and transforming the city's downtown Main Street into a giant pastel-colored work of art.

"A lot of people are pretty shy about drawing, so I think it's a nice way of people collaborating and they get out there and get to try it," said Kathy Kyle.

Kyle has been attending the annual festival for more than 5 years.

Artists, both young and old showed off their creative minds.

22 artists will receive awards with more than $1,000 in cash prizes handed out.
