Baby boy declared Iowa's 18th Safe Haven baby since 2002

Posted: Updated:
A baby boy born at an Iowa hospital on April 15 is Iowa's 18th Safe Haven baby.

The Iowa Department of Human Services said a mother asked that her newborn son be declared a Safe Haven baby immediately after he was born on April 15.

The infant was placed in the custody of DHS and a court hearing to terminate parental rights will be held within a month.

Amy McCoy with DHS said the infant is currently in foster care.

McCoy said in safe haven situations, the court typically orders the child into DHS custody. The child cannot be placed for adoption until a hearing is held that terminates the parental rights.

Iowa's Safe Haven law allows parents to give up custody of their babies aged 14 days and younger to a hospital or care facility without being charged with abandonment.

Details of the parents are withheld in order to protect the identity of parents and child.

Iowa adopted its Safe Haven law in 2002 in the wake of a high-profile 2001 case involving an eastern Iowa mother who killed her home-delivered newborn.

Since 2002, 18 infants have been given up for custody to the state under the law.
