Could you live on minimum wage?

Posted: Updated:
The push to raise the U.S. minimum wage to $10.10 stalled in the Senate today, but some in the Cedar Valley are wondering, how much is enough?

At the current minimum, $7.25, an employee working 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year would earn $15,800 before taxes. Some say, that's not a living wage.

"I've never calculated that out that way, and I do think that it's disappointing," said one woman in downtown Waterloo.

The raise to $10.10 would bring the yearly wage to about $21,000.

"In the wealthiest nation on earth, nobody who works full time should ever have to raise a family in poverty," President Obama said.

On the other hand, some say a raise comes with a downside.

"It would cost up to a million American jobs," said Sen. Mitch McConnell (R.) Kentucky.
