Experts: video baby monitors vulnerable to hackers

Posted: Updated:

Security experts say hackers can take control of video baby monitors, gaining access to a live stream of your child's room.

Many video monitors are 'IP cameras' which send data through the internet, and as one Ohio family found, that leaves the device vulnerable.

The family told reporters that a hacker took control of their camera in the night, moving it around the room, and even using the speaker to yell obscenities at their sleeping child.

Steve Crozier owns SmartTech in Cedar Falls. He said preventing this kind of incident is pretty simple: set strong passwords on all your internet devices, including your wifi router.

But he said the simplest fix is to avoid these devices altogether, because he's not comfortable with anything that puts his child's image on the web.

"If I need to look in on my children, I go to their room," he said. "Sometimes, the old way is still the best way."

Crozier also said if you absolutely need one of these cameras, he recommends you have a professional install it, to keep it secure.

Crozier has more information about crafting strong passwords on his website, here.
