TED talks event coming to Dubuque in June

Posted: Updated:

People in Dubuque will have a chance to expand their minds at an independently organized TED event in June.

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to "Ideas Worth Spreading," as its tag line asserts. It started as a conference in California in 1984 and has since expanded to meetings, events and talks all around the world, with topics ranging from classical music and crowd-funding to love and advances in medicine and technology. And everything in between.

TED stands for technology, entertainment, design.

At a TED conference, the world's leading thinkers and doers are asked to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes or less. Speakers have included Roger Ebert, Sheryl Sandberg, Bill Gates, Elizabeth Gilbert, Benoit Mandelbrot, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Brian Greene, Isabel Allende and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

On June 6, Dubuque will see its very own TED conference, called TEDxDubuque. TEDx events are independently- and locally-organized TED events.

The TEDxDubuque theme will be Connection. It will feature up to nine diverse speakers and three artistic performances and will be held in the Babka Black Box Theater inside the University of Dubuque's Heritage Center.

In its first year, TEDxDubuque will be limited to a crowd size of just 100 people.
