Waterloo missing 851 million gallons of water

Posted: Updated:
WATERLOO (KWWL) - No one really knows exactly what happened to 851-million gallons of water, but people at Waterloo Water Works have a good idea of where it all went.

Dennis Clark, the general manager at Waterloo Water Works, said the water is "unaccounted for" because it's non-metered water.

He said non-metered water is used for flushing hydrants, putting out fires, and flushing out water mains.

According to Clark, 18.5 percent of last year's pumpage was unaccounted for which is the highest it's been in 10-15 years.

In years past, Clark said the amount is typically around 15 percent.

"A lot of these things are hard to quantify so these go in this big bucket we call 'unaccounted for water.' That unaccounted for water is a factor of life for running a municipal utility company," said Clark.

Clark said he anticipates a larger percent of unaccounted for water next year because of the excessive amount of flushing crews had to do with hydrants and water mains in the months of January, February and March.

According to Clark, no customers in Waterloo should experience a rate increase because of the unaccounted for water this past year.

He said rates increased in January to help replace aging infrastructure.
