KEOKUK COUNTY (KWWL) -

The Keokuk County Sheriff’s Office confirms one person is dead and two injured as a result of the strong storms and damaging winds that ripped though much of eastern Iowa.

Uprooted trees, twisted metal and debris scattered the streets in Kinross.

“Couple barns down, some light poles on the road and we kept going,” said Gary Sampson, a resident of Kinross.

Gary Sampson lives on the northwest side of Kinross, an area that appears to be one of the hardest hit.

“Our fire pit ring, out from the bricks around it, put it over by the neighbor’s house,” said Sampson.

His property sustained minor damage, but across the road was a different story.

Metal siding was literally tossed over hay stacks and the roof of a storage shed torn off.

“First sign we saw there was a storm was when we were in Menards in Ottumwa and the lights went out,” he said.

Just south of Kinross near Harper, crews from Alliant Energy were repairing downed power lines.

The county sheriff’s office there’s substantial damage all across the county.

“I thought wow at first. Then I thought at least it isn’t like the big tornado came through in the 80s,” said Sampson.
