Bonnie Brandenburg of Fredericksburg is set to retire after 42 years of childcare
FREDERICKSBURG (KWWL) -
Every day at work is fun and different for Bonnie Brandenburg, and she never has to leave her house. More than 40 years ago, she started Brandenburg Quality Daycare for Tots in Fredericksburg.
"I thought I want to stay home with my three children so I started a daycare in my own home. After my three children went to school, I loved it so much I just stayed in it," said Bonnie Brandenburg.
Throughout the last four decades, she's cared for more than 230 children. She currently has six full-time kids Monday through Friday.
"We work on numbers and colors and ABC's, and I read them books. Lots of coloring," said Brandenburg.
"Do you have a favorite activity? Coloring," said four-year-old Sydney.
Throughout the years, former daycare kids have invited Brandenburg to their graduations and weddings.
"That really means a lot to me. It makes me feel like I've done something for them in their life," said Bonnie Brandenburg.
While Bonnie Brandenburg loves the children and their parents, she's decided it's time to retire after 42 years.
"I thought that's long enough. I'm ready to start a new chapter in my life. I have six grandchildren. So I would like to spend more time with them," said Brandenburg.
Brandenburg is already preparing herself for the first weekday when she wakes up and no kids arrive at her door.
"Oh, it's gonna be tough. It's going to be kinda sad for me," she said.
The licensed daycare provider plans to retire June 1st. She said it's been a great 42 years, and she couldn't have asked for a better job. There's never a dull day.
Brandenburg's children are hosting a celebration for her on June 14. All former daycare kids are invited to attend.
