CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

The 5th Annual EcoFest in Cedar Rapids is all about going green.

The family-fun event kicked off in the city's Newbo District as part of a late celebration of Earth Day.

People could learn about sustainability, alternative energy and local foods.

There were many interactive activities including popping solar popcorn, a solar oven and other eco-friendly demonstrations.

The fest encourages people to reduce and reuse personal and household items.

"There's definitely a big environmental impact from incorporating renewable energy," said Jackie Boat a conservation volunteer. "So not only are you reducing the amount of fossil fuels you're using, you're reducing the amount of CO2 that's being put into the atmosphere and the amount of pollution being put into the atmosphere."

Attendees also received special discounts at some New Bohemia businesses that featured locally made and grown foods along with other earth-friendly recycled products.
