Cedar Valley Arboretum hosts volunteer event this weekend

WATERLOO (KWWL) - There isn't a lot of green out at the Cedar Valley Arboretum yet, but that'll change soon. Saturday, April 26th the arboretum is hosting its volunteer open house. It's a great way to recruit new volunteers for the arboretum's season, which runs from April through October.

"Right now we have about 100 volunteers that are active not only in gardening but committees and all kinds of stuff," said Cedar Valley Arboretum Executive Director Robert Pruitt.

Old and new volunteers are invited out to the arboretum anytime between 10 and Noon Saturday to get information, meet other volunteers, and to sign up for which gardens you'd like to tend.

Robert Pruitt said volunteers are why the arboretum is here.

"The arboretum was started by volunteers in our community. It started in 1996, that's when the first trees were planted. Since then it's been a volunteer organization. There are only two of us who are paid staff," said Pruitt.

Typically, volunteers work in teams on specific gardens. There are about 20 gardens at the arboretum with more in the works. In a little more than a month, an empty space next to the welcome center is set to be the site of a new waterfall thanks to grants from the Black Hawk County Gaming Association and the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa.

Pruitt said if you haven't visited the arboretum yet, it's like visiting a living museum.

"We're a wonderful place to come and relax and enjoy connecting to nature," he said.

The arboretum is open from dawn until dusk. It's located on Orange Road in Waterloo, right next to Hawkeye Community College.
