Posted: Updated:
WATERLOO (KWWL) - The Waterloo Black Hawks scored once in each period as they took down Sioux City 3-2 to open up the Western Conference Finals.
Waterloo fell behind in the early going after Sioux City's Avery Petersen stuffed a puck through the pads of Black Hawk goaltender Cal Petersen.
Waterloo rallied for the tying goal when Zach Stanford, behind the net, fed Drew Melanson for the equalizer. They took the lead in the second period when Tyler Sheehy stuffed home a rebound off a blast by Brandon Montour in the second.
The teams traded goals in the third. Patrick Russell flipped in a backhander on the power play to pick up Waterloo's tally and what would turn out to be the game winner.
The teams will meet again in game 2 on Saturday night in Young Arena.
