Jonathan Youngbear charged with murder in federal court

A Meskwaki Nation Settlement man was formally charged with first-degree murder in federal court in Cedar Rapids on Friday.
Jonathan Curtis Youngbear, 20, was charged during his initial hearing Friday and held without bond. His next court date was set for June 23.
Youngbear is charged with the fatal stabbing of Severn Daniel Jefferson on Feb. 24.
If convicted, Youngbear faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Peter Deegan and Anthony Morfitt. It was investigated jointly by the Meskwaki Nation Tribal Police, the Tama County Sheriff's Office, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the FBI.
