Cascade native brings film to Dubuque festival

The Julien Dubuque International Film Festival has brought one eastern Iowa director and producer back home. .

Ryan McLaughlin grew up in Cascade, but moved to L.A. to study film when he was 18. His film "Sunken City" will be showcased this weekend at the film festival.

The movie is about a detective who was forced off the streets of San Pedro due to budget cuts and person demands being called back to his beat after a woman washes up on a shore at Sunken City.

"It's a mystery and comedy, kind of like "Fletch" or "The Big Lebowski." I was inspired by those films." McLaughlin said Friday.

McLaughlin said he never dreamed of showing his film near his hometown.

"My old teachers are coming to the's surreal. I never imagined showing the movie in Dubuque when we shot it." McLaughlin said.

McLaughlin said he has two more films that he is working on getting produced. He said one of the films is about Iowa and the other, a scifi comedy in L.A.
