HAMPTON (KWWL) -

A Hampton police officer was hurt after his gun jammed at a gun range.

The Hampton Police Department says Officer Al Brandt, a certified firearms instructor, was conducting a handgun qualification at around 8 p.m. on April 17, when a malfunction occurred with one of the officers weapons.

As Brandt was trying to clear the jam, the gun fired, sending a bullet into Brandt's hand.

Brandt was taken to Franklin General Hospital before being transferred to Mercy Hospital in Mason City for surgery.

Officer Brandt is recovering at home.

The incident is being investigated by the Franklin County Sheriff's Office.
