Where are the sinkholes? Dubuque man wants officials to help

DUBUQUE (AP) -

A Dubuque man is calling for state and local officials to help homeowners learn about sinkholes that might damage their property.

Nick Thumma told the Telegraph Herald he's been pushing governments to be more proactive on the issue since a street in front of his house repeatedly sunk.

City crews determined there was a collapsed mine shaft beneath the street.

During the mid-1800s, zinc and lead mines were dug throughout Dubuque. Those mines were rarely properly capped after miners moved on.

Thumma says the city should make information about the mines and tunnels easily available, and homeowners should be able to buy insurance specifically to protect themselves against damage from sinkholes.

Some states mandate the creation of such risk pools, but Iowa isn't among them.
