CBHS in Waterloo needs help with 15 dogs surrendered by one owner

Posted: Updated:
WATERLOO (KWWL) - The Cedar Bend Humane Society in Waterloo recently took in 15 dogs surrendered by one owner. Staff members with the shelter think the dogs are pugle, terrier mixes. The youngest is 10 months old and the oldest is around three.

Physically, the dogs are okay. They weren't abused or neglected. However, they were never socialized.

One hid under a table, and one jumped into a box to avoid contact with people.

"They came to us in good physical shape, but he just didn't have the time to spend with them so they're very unsocialized, very scared, very shaky. They were a little nippy, but they're starting to trust us more," said Vania Warns with the Cedar Bend Humane Society.

The shelter is accepting food, collar, and leash donations for the dogs. Also, all 15 dogs were recently altered so you can make a monetary donation to help cover the cost of those surgeries. Now that the dogs are altered, the shelter is looking for foster homes.

"If somebody would be willing to take one into your home and spend some time with it, that's be really ideal for them so they can get used to a lifestyle in a house," said Warns.

If you aren't able to foster one of the dogs, you can still help by volunteering to spend time with the dogs at the shelter.

Vania Warns with the Cedar Bend Humane Society said physical, one-on-one time with the dogs can make a big difference in how quickly they're ready for adoption.

"Like what I'm doing now. Pet them, let them sit on your lap, let them know your touch is okay. We're not going to hurt them. Even talking can make a big difference," said Vania Warns.

Warns said it will take patience and time, but hopefully some of the dogs could be ready for adoption in the next two to three weeks.

The sooner the dogs are comfortable around people instead of just each other, the sooner they can find a good home.
