Hundreds commemorate Good Friday at St. Donatus Parish

Posted: Updated:

Many Christians across eastern Iowa spent Friday commemorating the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ, as a part of Good Friday. Hundreds made their way on Good Friday to the St. Donatus Parish to take a part in the Way of the Cross walk. The outdoor way of the cross consists of 14 red-brick stations along a winding path up leading up to the Pieta Chapel. During Friday's Way of the Cross walk hundreds walked to each of the stations, prayed and sang.

Mary Pat Breitfelder is a part of the St. Donatus Parish council. She said the event has been going on for years.

"The stations were built in 1861 and we had an outdoor Way of the Cross every year since." Breitfelder said Friday.

She said the Way of Cross draws people from all over each and every year. She said one year the walk drew 1,000 people.

This year was the first year Tara Donovan walked through the Way of the Cross in St. Donatus. She said it was a moving experience for herself and her four children.

"It just kind of makes you reflect on what it must have been like back then." Donovan said.

Officials with the parish tell us the Way of the Cross is always open for people looking to walk through the 14 stations.
