Baby chicks in high demand

VINTON (KWWL) - Easter is right around the corner, and area farm supply stores are having a hard time keeping up with the demand for baby chicks.

However, sales associates at Theisen's in Vinton, say the demand isn't from Easter; they say it's the spring weather that has people flocking to the stores.

"They are flying like hot cakes," said Brett Whitson, a sales associate at Theisen's.

Whitson said it's hard to keep up with the demand for baby chicks.

"We're always getting orders," he said.

According to Whitson, the season for buying baby chicks happens to fall around Easter, but he said mostshopperss at Theisen's purchase the chicks for eggs or meat.

"It's kind of weather oriented," he said, adding that the warmer weather impacts the amount of eggs chickens will lay.

"They'll grow better and get out," he said.

Whitson said Theisen's has no policy for people purchasing chickens, but that sales associates remind customers that baby chicks aren't meant to be photography props or Easter gifts.

"You've got to have the bedding. You've got to have the food. You've got to have everything that they need, and they're just...unless you've got the room you know, I just don't think it'd be a good idea to get a bunch of chickens," he said.
