Veterans Memorial Building officially opens, flood renovations complete

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

After nearly six years, the Veterans Memorial Building in Cedar Rapids held an official opening ceremony.

It's one of the city's most recognizable landmarks and has undergone significant renovations since the floods of 2008.

There were tours of the significant improvements to the facility, and a job fair for veterans.

"Now that we have the facilities and the place to do that, now we need to bring the people together and be able to put that programming in place so we can go forward to best serve our community at large, but in particular the veterans," said Mike Jager, executive director of Veterans Memorial Commission.

Jager says they could have had the opening ceremony several months ago, but they wanted to wait until Tuesday.

He says it was frustrating at times when veterans couldn't use the facility, but he's glad it's available and open now.
