State Senate okays plan to expand preschool opportunities

Posted: Updated:

A motion to get more 4-year-olds in preschool and create incentives for the creation and expansion of preschool programs was okayed by the Iowa Senate.
The measure passed on a vote of 28-22 on Monday with the only opposing votes coming from Republicans.
The proposed legislation would offer additional funding to school districts that have existing preschool programs or that would create new programs in an effort to up enrollment.
The incentives proposed would be offered, starting in 2015 and would last for three years.
There's currently a program that funds schooling for 4-year-olds that was established in 2007 called The Iowa Statewide Voluntary Preschool Program.
The bill now moves to the House.
