UPDATE: Prairie du Chien Slumberland destroyed in huge fire

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. (KWWL) - A large fire Sunday lasting into Monday morning destroyed the Slumberland furniture store in Prairie du Chien, Wis., and left several surrounding businesses heavily damaged by smoke and water.

The fire broke out just after 7 p.m. Sunday night in the Blackhawk Junction Shopping Center at 700 East Blackhawk Junction in Prairie du Chien.

Eight area fire departments battled to keep the flames from spreading to nearby businesses and homes.

No one was injured.

The Wisconsin State Fire Marshal is assisting in the investigation of the fire. It in unclear what caused it as of Monday morning.
A hardware store and several other businesses at the mall suffered smoke and water damage. Many businesses at Blackhawk Junction remained closed Monday.

The smoke was so thick for a time that nearby homes were evacuated.

Firefighters were also hampered by high winds, which fanned the flames.

Assisting the Prairie du Chien Fire Department were Eastman Fire, Seneca Fire, Wauzeka Fire, Lancaster Fire, Boscobel Fire, Rural Prairie du Chien Bridgeport Township Fire and McGregor Fire.

Also providing assistance were the Prairie du Chien Police Department, Crawford County Sheriff's Department, MarMac Police Department, TriState Ambulance and Crawford County Emergency Management.
