DUBUQUE (KWWL) - Dubuque police announced Thursday morning one of the drivers involved in a two-vehicle crash Saturday night has died.

That person was 22-year-old Alexandra Benson, of Decorah. Benson died of her injuries from the crash on Thursday at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

At 9:20 p.m. Saturday, the Dubuque Emergency Communications Center received a call about a suspicious person with a flashlight walking around a house in the 1600 block of Washington Street. The responding officers located a vehicle in the immediate area they believed might have been involved and conducted a traffic stop in the 1600 block of Jackson Street.

Benson was the driver of that truck, and police say she originally gave the officers a false name. Once the officers correctly identified Benson, they discovered there was an active warrant for her arrest, out of Delaware County.

When officers told her to get out of the truck, Benson refused and instead started driving westbound on 17th Street. Police say she ran the red light at White Street. She collided with southbound vehicle when she tried running another red light, at Central Avenue.

The driver of the southbound vehicle was 21-year-old Chansey Hendren, of Dubuque. Hendren and her passenger escaped their vehicle before it caught fire and later declined medical attention.

Benson and her passenger, 22-year-old Dubuque woman Kirstianna Siegert, were trapped in the truck as Dubuque police and fire officials tried extinguishing the fire. Siegert managed to escape with help from officials, while Benson had to be extricated.

Both women were transported to Mercy Medical Center Dubuque. Benson was later transferred to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where she died Thursday.

Correction: This story originally said Benson's vehicle was stopped in the 1600 block of Washington Street, as per a Dubuque Police press release. Police corrected their press release Thursday afternoon.
