Display at Chickasaw County Courthouse highlights child abuse prevention

Posted: Updated:
NEW HAMPTON (KWWL) - Wooden, blue cutouts line the sidewalk at the Chickasaw County Courthouse in New Hampton. They're part of a display set up by the Chickasaw County Child Abuse Prevention Council. April is Child Abuse Prevention Month.

"Each year during the month of April, our council puts a display up at the courthouse here. This is the first year for the new display featuring the cut outs of children of all ages," said Kevin Frey.

Each cutout shares a fact or message about child abuse. In 2012, 11,637 children were abused in the state of Iowa. Chickasaw County ranked 47th out of 99 for the number of abused children in 2012 with 47 founded cases. Those abuse cases range from denial of critical care, exposure to drugs, or physical and sexual abuse.

"It's interesting to walk by and read each figure, and do some thinking how people can be involved," said Frey.

Pastor Kevin Frey is the chair of the Chickasaw County Child Abuse Prevention Council, which formed about 14 years ago. He hopes this display makes people more aware about child abuse, and hopefully instills a desire to help. One way you can help raise awareness is by making a donation and placing a pinwheels at the courthouse. The pinwheels represent hope for a brighter tomorrow as well as a joyful and carefree childhood for all kids.

In addition, blue ribbons are tied to the trees at the courthouse to symbolize being the best we can be when it comes to the well-being of a child. The display will be at the Chickasaw County Courthouse through the end of April.
