Doughy Joey's Owners explain closure

Posted: Updated:

Waterloo restaurant Doughy Joey's Peetza suddenly closed their doors this week, leaving many with questions.

Owners Chuck and Joanna Landau owned the restaurant, in addition to the Cedar Falls location and the Brown Bottle in Waterloo. They say a new baby forced them to make some tough decisions.

"We kind of sat down and did a regrouping as a family," Chuck Landau said. "We had just been stretched a little thin for having the three places."

The said the sale was tough, but the right decision.

"It was a little bit stressful for us," Chuck said. "We think that it's going to be a good move for us, we'll be able to grow."

Employees were offered positions at other restaurants.

But some worry about adding an empty storefront to downtown.

"The health and wealth of a community is reflected in their downtown," said Cary Darrah, VP of Community Development for Greater Cedar Valley Alliance & Chamber. "So especially with all the efforts going on in downtown Waterloo, it will be critical for another business to go in there."

Still, there's not much to worry about. The Landau's say they've already sold the property, as is, to someone that plans to develop the storefront. It's unclear at this point what the owners will put there at this point.
